Alternator Help
« on: 27 March 2008, 13:19 »
Hi, the alternator in my car is, i believe on the way out. It makes a funny noise at times, and doesnt appear to charge the battery properly. What i want to know is, anywhere good to get a cheap alternator, and whether i can get a bigger one. I think mine is 55A but i had heard you can get 90A ones? Also, will an alternator from a GTI fit, or do i need a 1.3 version?

Thanks

I got a reconditioned one on exchange from Camberly Auto Factors for 70 bucks, as good as new!

For my 16v you can get a 65 amp one for £94, or a 90 amp one for £118 (from ECP).

unless you are running a serious amount of stereo equipment in the car, there really is no need for a larger one, it doesn't make any difference to starting or anything else.

Hmmm i suppose that makes sense. What about lights, i have 220W lights, which is actually 20A so i suppose that wont matter either!??

What about a GTI, will the alternator fit mine, just in case i see one and can get it cheap?

Thanks
