My MK1 and its rubbish brakes
« on: 27 March 2008, 13:37 »
I've got a 1983 MK1 Gti, which had been sat undisturbed for 7 years, so I have replaced quite a lot of its components. Regarding the brakes, I have done the following:

New shoes/drums on back
New discs/pads on front
All copper piping replaced

However, the brakes are still absolutely hopeless, I'm pretty much using the gears to slow it down. My old man reckons that it could be the servo, but alternatively as a cheap possible way to find out he says I could replace the 'servo pressure pipe'? Or something similar... any ideas if this might help and if so where to source such a thing?

Personally if the 6kg weight I've read on here is right for audi 80 calipers then I'd steer well clear!

Most usually upgrade the servo/cylinder to a mk2
you have actually bleed your brakes though haven't you?
Im sure there is something in the mk1 section about 256mm/280mm calipers - I could be wrong on that though... :undecided: (sorry...gonk moment, put the actual size of mk1 brakes rather than the upgarde size  )
I just run black diamond combi's with pagid pads atm..mk1s are renowned for their bad brakes, you can do the upgrades and it will be slightly better, but always hit the brake just that little bit sooner if you have to, or accelerate if you can make it
