bit of advice needed please!
« on: 26 March 2008, 22:21 »
had a look at a couple of golf gti turbos, but none have "ticked the right boxes" so far

anyway, my question is, should i be worried about a little "mayo/cream/sludge" in the engine oil cap. the golf i looked at today had a very small amount of this. there was a slight amount of pressure in the system but nothing too excessive. also there seemed to be a burning smell from the engine oil when i had taken the cap off.

ive spoken to my uncle who is a mechanic and he says that VW's can be prone to slight mayo effect in the caps if they are used on short runs alot, which this car was. i didnt get the car as i would rather be overly cautious than end up with a lemon......been there and done that

whats anyones experience with this......any creamy oil caps????

My only experience of the 'mayo effect' was in my Merc 190, and a week later the head gasket had gone in a big way

No mayo ever appeared anywhere on my Mk4 turbo. Walk away from that one.

You sometimes get mayo in the breather hoses of older GTI's, like my Mk2, which as you said is caused by doing only short runs.
