Like you say, similar power and similar power delivery. Both a lot of fun, BMW rear drive is interesting on a damp road if you're not used to it. Both have huge followings and spares are readily available. The 318iS is much sought after (as are all Golfs of course!) so beware anything that looks too good to be true.

If forced to choose one over the other I'd go for the Golf as the interiors are much harder wearing - but I'd love to have a nice example of each on my drive!

Cheers for the info folks :) think its gonna be an 8v as the 16,s sound thirsty an to be honest its very rare i use the motorways ! Do alot of town drivin though so quick off the mark is what im after !

Plus only really got a budget of about £1500 which hopefully will get me a clean one :)

Nice one folks

My Mrs used to have a e36 318is coupe befor she got her Mk4 V5 it was a nice car never broke apart from natural wear and tear stuff but to me it felt a little under powered but it handled really well a 16v would leave it for dust. And anyway E36s are getting a bit chav now id go for a nice 16v any day, in black with some Brock B1s and single smoked crosshairs and coilovers blaa blaa blaa blaa blaa

Gut instinct tells me the 3 series would be a lot pricier to maintain, and as for 16v v 8v, it has been thoroughly covered here:  http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=7750.0   (57 pages for you to read there matey!)

i had a 8v in bbm a couple of years ago, i loved it same spec as the 16v (ish) but i just loved the way it pulled in second gear, they go like a train! i have also heard the 16v is prone to going bang so i would not have one, plus i heard you are supposed to run valvers only on 95 octane fuel? im not exactly sure if this is true but if so its going to bump up your running costs plus insurance is higher. try and go for something fairly orignal if you can and a later model with p.a.s. as ones with no p.a.s are quite heavy. my golf had 170k on it before it died and that was only cause the previous owner had run it with no water in the system! if you look after the motor it will go until you get sick of the car, build quality is excellent and at least its not a ford! good luck whatever you do.

my daily is on 233k and is going strong (a good testiment to the engineering!).

iirc the 16v GTI's are meant to run on 98ron premium unleaded (95ron is normal unleaded), same as the 8v's

I don't think a semi will give the same results
