1998 Mk4 1.8t Engine Tuning
« on: 10 March 2008, 21:25 »
Hey all. After much trawling through the forums about this subject I'm left a little comfused (that happens to me a lot!).

I have a 1999 (s reg) golf gti turbo and have been offered a few bits from a audi s3 (2000 model) - I know the car well as it belongs to a friend of mine that is fitting a bigger turbo etc. I already have a BMC CDA filter (hello compression surge! ) and a miltek system will be going on soon with a decent set of coilovers in prep for more power. Maybe also an apexi avc-r.

My questions are: what will I need to fit to get the s3 turbo on there (fuel pump, injectors, clutch are a given but im not sure about the manifold or the downpipe). Also, once it's on the car I'll be looking at one hefty re-map and I know from looking at the JBS website that my ECU can't be flashed with software so how should I approach this ??

Sorry if I am repeating questions that have already been asked and answered  - I did look at the threads first honest!!

Thanks in advance.

Right as nobody as helped you out on this i will!

The turbo on a s3 (apy or apx lump) is a KO4, you will need oil and water lines, new exhaust manifold and downpipe as well as the injectors, then you'l need a remap straight away. You can get away with using a standard mk4 clutch depending on what power your going to be running, I have heard of alot of people using clutched from a vr6 on 1.8t's with ko4's.

If upgrading from a KO3 to a KO4 I wouldnt get a flash map done (generic map), I would get some dosh together, take your car to somewhere with a rolling road and get a live custom map done, its the only way to really get the most out of your car safely, rather then just having a presaved map which isnt designed specifically for your set up.

hope that helps mate!

Ash
Will always love my mk4 but she had to go...225 Quattro TT in its place....but its still black (she lives on in spirit!)

Thanks for that Ash, do you know if I can use the oil and water lines from the S3?

Also, can I use the S3 manifold (I have an AGU lump)? I'm guessing I will have to get a downpipe fabricated as the S3 downpipe is shaped to go around the axle. Unless anyone know's of somewhere that produces them?

I'll take your point about the re-map, I've spoke to Jabba sport but they don't want to do it as they'd prefer to put an IHI on - which is fair enough really although dissapointing for me!     AMD have offered to do it but they said they'd need the car for a few days. Could I drive the car to the rolling road after fitting the turbo if I keep off boost?

Has anyone done this conversion before? Interested to hear how you done it and what power you're getting.

So many questions!

Cheers
Matt
