Mk3 8V stalling?

Lo there,
Wondering if anyone can assist, I've a '96 8V with 98K, all original, that has started stalling during change downs and while stopping at junctions etc.
Revs just seem to drop below the normal idle speed (say to 5/600 revs) but don't pick up.
Doesn't happen every time, but it's getting worse.
If I catch it (healing/towing) the first time, it then goes on to tick over perfectly.
I've changed out plugs, leads, airfilter, Dis cap and rotor arm, no difference!
Assumed it was a sensor so had its fault codes read, and nothing showed up.
Had it 'looked at' by a VW specialist, he cleaned it all up and set it up back to correct settings!! Sorted it for 3 days then same thing gradually started to happen!

Anyone seen this before???

Hey there,

Yeah my 1997 GTi 8v did exactly the same thing a couple of months ago. I was told if the crank case breather pipe was blocked with a build up off gunk it would cause this, also if the throttle body was dirty it had the same symtems.
It ended up that the crank case breather pipe not only had gunk up it but had split in two places. I went and got the 2x pipes for the breather from VW (coast about £25) and after that shes been running mint.

My car stalled 6 times today in a 20 minute journey, whilst idling/ pulling off (as well as running jumpy when accelerating post-gearchange)...

Been like it for last few weeks....

- changed air filter setup

- cleaned throttle body

- tried injector cleaner

- service

-new ht leads

- relays done

...

No different, so Ive had enough of throwing money away on pointlessly changing things...

Booked in at a specialists for this friday....


So my advice mate is take it somewhere...

as it could be quite a few things, Ive found it useless changing random things....

 Although free things like cleaning throttle body are obviously worth it.

ps. I'll let you know what they say on friday

I think the throttle body was what was cleaned before, so I'll check that again and then the breather pipes (i.e. the free things).

Apparently relay numbers 30 & 167 can be the ones at fault.

i think that relay thing is rubbish i changed them and still no difference. the geeza a t the garage said maye its the potentionmeter in the throttle body but i was not going to change this as it cost £56 main dealer.
