Looks i will have to go down the route of buying vagcom so has anyone tried these? good or bad:

Yep got mine via these guys and it works just fine and delivery was next day.

Hi!

This lead has the correct protocol to well work with the VAGCOM software,  You will need VAGCOM release 409.1 USB which is designed work with this 3rd part OBD leads

I have found most 3rd party leads are as good as the offical interfaces which Ross-Tech sell.

I didn't get mine from there, but it looks like the same lead.  Works fine, in fact used it yesterday to clear down an airbag fault on the Golf before selling (I swapped passenger airbag for a glovebox, but have put airbag back in for selling now and it came up as a fault..)
Sold the VR6... Now officially An Old Man With A Passat Estate.  At least it's a 1.8T :grin:
