Mk2 1.6 to a Mk3 1.4/1.6
« on: 17 February 2008, 14:53 »
hi,

Now I have the mk2 GTI I have been thinking of selling my 1.6 mk2 driver and buying a mk3 1.4 or 1.6 golf or vento ... for the low and slow look  and and for the comfort  not really bothered about the speed just want something with leccy windows etc. Also had a look on the insurance and the mk3 is cheaper. Does this sound like a good plan? or will I regret selling the 1.6 driver?

Also posted in the mk3 section

Thanks

Rich

I would not get a 1.4, it really did feel under powered, my cousins 1.6 CL is quite nice (leccy windows) but my GL kicks it!

I have the 1.8 version and it comes with leccy windows/sunroof/heated mirrors/rcl/ and full closure when you turn the key in the door handle and it does have some poke.. somewhere.

The ride is nothing like the Mk2, that handled really well and I miss it because my Mk3 doesn't at all. It rocks like a boat, i hate the brakes so I'm trading it for either a Rado or Mk3 16v.

Saying that, it is so much more comfortable and reliable. Compared to my Mk2 the GL is a dream. Starts on the button, the single point injection system isn't the best out there but it works fine!

It all depends, I miss my Mk2 for the looks and the ride but I love the comfort and reliability of the Mk3.

I'd sell up and if you can find one, try and get the 1.6 GL.

Hmm, well i was going to suggest that it may not be worth it if it was only for a couple of months or so but i guess it could easily be another 6 months. If that is the case then i would say go for the swap to the 1.4 (if you really don't care about speed) but just make sure you don't spend more than what you get for the mk2, and money you save on tax, fuel, insurance and the sale of the driver could be used to put into the gti.

If ultimately the Mk2 GTI is going to be your main car, and if your Driver is running well at the mo, I wouldn't bother with the hassle of buying and selling.
