AC on the blink again!
« on: 24 February 2008, 13:34 »
The frog stealers 'repaired' my AC system three times last summer and finally got it working for longer than a day at the beginning of the winter having been without AC for most of the summer!
It started when the original compressor blew up!  When this happens, all manner of sh1te is deposited around the entire refrigeration circuit and requires a thorough flushing of the system before fitting a new compressor.  The stealers, in their wisdom, chose to simply install a new compressor which worked for one day before the debris in the system fooked the new compressor.  For the second visit to the stealers, they said they flushed the system and fitted another new compressor.  Again, this worked for only a day!  For the third visit, the stealers said they were going to have to replace the entire system.......condenser, avaporator, lines etc. and fit yet another compressor.  The stealers kept the car for...........wait for it.........TWO WEEKS!  I was, however, provided with a VW Passat courtesy car (very boring)! I am not convinced that they did replace everything but the AC seemed to be working, and this time , at least, for the short time that I needed to use it before the onset of the winter.  It was difficult to judge how well the AC was working during the winter but I did engage the AC from time to time to keep the compressor seals lubricated and moist.
Now that it is starting to warm up again, here in S.France, it would be nice to have an efficient AC system.  Guess what?
Not working yet again!
Now all the considerable work carried out before was when the car was still in the 2 years waranty period and there was no quible whatsoever. I have paid for an additional 2 years guarantee but I fear that anything that can remotely be considered as a part that wears out will not be covered.  However, it could be that all VW repairs are guaranteed for one year.  I will speak to the stealers this week, so fingers crossed!

Anybody else had major problems with the AC on their GTI?

thankfully it's been fine for the 2 years 11 months (touch wood)...but then I keep it on all the time and never turn it off (still get 34mpg minimum)...maybe that's better for it ?

Only turn mine off when doing a rolling road, doing a standing qtr or track day. Rest of the time it is left on and works fine. Never even consider MPG.

Yes, I get the impression that perhaps VW should perhaps eliminate the 'econ' button!

Getting back to my original problem when the compressor self destructed, I seem to remember reading somewhere that there were issues with a certain marque of compressor used in GTI's around 2005, although VW have never acknowledged that!  Just wondered if anyone else had had any experience of compressor failure and how it was handled by the stealers?

From what I understand, the A/C compressor is always running (albeit slowly) even when "turned off". Something about keeping the seals lubed up or something :smug:

i was told by a company that specialises in installing and recharging AC, that its good to keep it on, otherwise the pipes do dry up and then leaks occur and failure.
