sloppy gearstick!!

right me new 8v (bargin!!!) has only got 3/4 gears the others have gone walkies, i got it mega cheap on the know that this was the prob, i got it home and had a look and one of the plactic 'pop on' ball joints on the selector rods has broke (so no side ways selection) its the one nearest the exhaust manifold so i guess its got brittle over the years etc, getting a new 'pop on' bit tomorrow from vw, but when this is done the side ways movement will still be quite sloppy (as i drove this car last year when i did some work on it), now when you look at the selector rods(near gearbox), theres a wheel type thing that moves with the side ways movement of the gear stick, now this is very worn do you think this could be the cause of the mega sideways movement??

just got new rod from vw and fitted ?6.78 including vat, 2 mins to fit and has fixed the car ;D, the only part which still feels a bit sloppy/worn is the reversing bit?, you know where your spose to push down to get reverse, well i can get with  out pushing down, makes junctions scary as you have to get used to it before you know wether your in reverse or 1st!! any ideas which bit i need to adjust/replace to solve this??

You need to replace the gearstick ball to fix the 'dont have to press to get into reverse' problem, check this page.

The kit is still available from VW, best to get it from them as you know its gonna be top quality.

side ways movement is also caused by worn linkage the small plastic bit which is by the gearbox speedo cable!
