A running Rallye is worth anything from 3k - 10k, I'd say the average at the moment is about 4 - 5k. They are rare because they only made 5000 of them and a lot of those have been crashed and written off. I read somewhere that there were about 1900 of them left but I don't know how true that is.
......now officially dubless.

They're pretty common in comparison to the Golf and Jetta Syncro - 665 RHD Golfs and 115 RHD Jettas.  That's not a typo, that's 115 Jettas.  Now that's rare.

Best of all they're lighter than Rallyes and normally under £1000 when they come up in good nick, too.

How is that a fair comparison? If you want to go like that then there are (were) 63 UK Rallye's sold.

Weren't the Syncro's also 90ps? Good job they are lighter then!

Sorry, I wasn't aware it had to be a fair comparison - just offering up a cheaper, yet just as effective base proposition - the 4WD elements is quite similar.

Yes the Syncros are only 90PS to start, but at £500-1000 to buy that leaves a lot of budget to modify them over and above a Rallye, where you've blown a minimum of £2-3k before you get going.  Plus there are rather fewer obsolete and 'special' parts on the Syncro vs the Rallye - good luck getting hold of a new screen if yours gets a crack or chip in it (obsolete and no VAG stock left).

The Rallye had a serious disadvantage when it was on sale in the UK in that it was poisonously expensive and LHD.  The Syncros were just 'rather expensive', coming with the added benefit of being RHD (I'm just finding out what a 'benefit' that is with mine now).  The RHD high-tunnel shell means the cars are very UK-market specific, whereas the 63 UK Rallyes would be that much different to the EU version..... would they?

Not being able to buy a new bonded screen would not motivate me to buy a Syncro over a Rallye.
