gt tdi starting problem
« on: 31 January 2008, 19:34 »
just had a search through and couldn't find anything similar

my T plate gt tdi starts fine from cold, but once you've done a run in it, like getting home from work, then go straight back out, it turns over for a good 10 secs or so before eventually firing.

anybody have this? any ideas people?

*update as i have the car home now, it does it from cold , glow plugs maybe?

also ive seen all the fault codes posted but how do i go about getting the code? cause surely if you go VW they will just tell you what's wrong?

cheers, pete

plugs maybe when its cold. When the engines hot you should start ok even with nackerd plugs. Probs a sensor of some sort.

To get the codes you need a VAG COM. Not only dealers have these. If you have had no warning lights on the dash there wont be a code logged. (think thats how it works)

oh right, no i haven't had any codes pop up yet, going to change the plugs at the weekend and go from there, been told there's a relay under the steering wheel that can go wrong and also the cold temp sensor could fault and not show a code.

My understanding is that faults can occur and be loged in VAGCOM without the fault lights coming up. MAF being just one example.

You could be right as im not 100% but whats the point in logging a fault if it doesnt tell you there is a fault logged?

Suppose, but if thats the case, thats just silly. At least its not "this program has performed an illegal operation and will be closed"

It could be the cold temp sensor. i had to change that on mine, although mine is petrol. still havent got round the cold starting issue though. Good luck with the plugs, hope theyre not in the same place as my spark plugs are. youll be on all day.

Fault codes can be logged without the light coming on.  Its so they can ambush you when you take your car in for a service.  In fairness the light would never be off otherwise, they would be better off putting the light on when everythings OK.

In response the origional post - if it were a petrol I'd be saying coolant temp sender but I don't think DERV's rely on this as much as petrol's do.  I know my folks Passat TDI has had a dodgy temp sender for the last three months without any issues whatsoever.  Its never that cut and dry though is it.....
