My 1st AUM ECU Problem - Explained?
« on: 01 February 2008, 12:48 »
Right this was what was wrong with my 1st AUM ECU:

When I sent my ECU to DNA tuning, he didnt remap it, he just chipped my ECU and my engine didnt like it, kept throwing up loads of fault codes, my ecu kept saying it was over boosting and then cut the boost at 4k  so I had a choice to make, keep it at higher power and have no boost over 4k or put it back to standard so I changed it for a standard AUM 180 ECU, clocks and changed the immobiliser chip in my key.

So instead of flogging the ECU on ebay to some poor sod who would buy it and have the same problems I deceided "why should I pay for a map and not get it" so I got in touch with the tuner explained the situation and sent him back the ECU on wed, he received it Thursday and then has sent it back to me with this reply via email:

Hi Ash,

ECU on it's way back to you fixed, I'd advise you keep your "expert" mate away from it! The fault code EEPROM error refers not to the EPROM(note one E) or chip as he likes to call it but the tiny memory area on the small 8 pin chip that is written on power down from RAM in the processor, if the unit is incorrectly powered on or up this can occur or if someone tries to read or write it and fails....! The only way to correct this is wipe the ECU and restore to a factory state then rewrite base settings then it rewrites it’s EEPROM correctly after flash on power down from RAM which is what I did yesterday.

Cheers

Just wanted to know if there are any people out there who know about maps and stuff and actually think this guy is talking sense or not. And as far as him saying my "expert" mate anybody who was at Brands the other night and met Big Ben and Little James know they know their stuff. By what it says above does it sound like he has now flash loaded a map onto the ECU or just replaced the chip - this is so confusing!!!

Just another chapter in the many saga's that is my mk4
Will always love my mk4 but she had to go...225 Quattro TT in its place....but its still black (she lives on in spirit!)

Good luck mate.

Problem with situations like this when you dont really know whats going on is that its just one persons word over the others, what ther f**k do you do?

Well all im planning to do is go down to Bens Garage, plug in vagcom swap the ECU's over and take the car out, if it wheel spins all the way up to third with no loss in boost then im happy!

He just emailed me this; which confirms that the ECU has been flash loaded now instead of putting in a piggy back chip - lets hope this works!

The ECU was flashed via the ecu connection which recorrected both areas, even so if it was done either way the data loaded on to it is the same!

What he's saying is right. I take it your mate did something to the ECU? It will flash up an EEPROM error, and that is something that VW put in (not your mapper) by eu law so that it can be recognised if your ecu map has been tampered with. Most/all remappers code around that error by using their own checksums. I wouldn't let anyone who didn't know that anywhere near my ecu.
People who build cars and engines are not electronics engineers, well.. generally anyway

Ben didnt actually touch the ECU, he just plugged in vagcom and it came up with "internal control module error". He has now flashed the ECU so technically it should be sweet!

Now I have got a standard ECU and this one so what il do is save some pennies, buy a new TIP and then get a custom code remap on the standard ECU and then flog the mapped one on ebay in a few months.

What gave you the impression that using a map on a 3rd party eprom soldered in to the ecu is any worse than a flash loaded map? Jabbasport have been doing it that way since the dawn of time, and as much as my personal experience with them has been rubbish.. can't deny squeaky mike's 1.8T wizardry!

I'm sure some of the guys on here would be interested in your ecu at the right price

Well I spoke to Reuben at Tuning Werkes and I cant remember exactly what he said but it was somethnig to do with the memory on an AUM ECU doesnt like chips, whereas where the AGU/ARZ ECU's are more basic they can deal with a chip and dont need to be flash loaded. To be honest I cant really remember what he said.

Il be flogging the original mapped ecu at some point and its had the immobiliser defeated so it is just plug and play, want a custom code stage 2 map on the standard ECU im running once I have got the TIP, got everything else required.

Il report back once the new ECU has arrived and once its been plugged in.
