Engine Mounts replaced with new, NO Improvement!
« on: 22 January 2008, 16:21 »
I replaced my front engine mount (GSF) about 1 year ago and it was a BIG improvement.

But, there was still quite alot of engine movement, so I thought I would replace the other 2 mounts also from GSF.

Replacing these had little or no effect on the engine movement as it's still quite bad. (When I say bad I mean that if you are in 1st or 2nd and take your foot off the GO pedal quite quickly you can really feel the engine 'slump' back on to the mounts)

The golf is a 1.8 Driver with a Weber carb. I wouldn't have thought that the Weber carb would put much more pressure on the mounts, (right or wrong?)

Are the GSF engine mounts a really crap choice of replacement parts?

I don't have deep enough pockets for vibratechnics mounts just yet but will consider them if they will fix the problem. What other choices are there?

Any info would be great

I may be wrong but I believe this can also be caused by worn inner and outer CV joints, not just the mounts. Also check to make sure your throttle cable is correctly adjusted.

the front engine mount gets pulled on acceleration whereas the rear and gearbox mount gets compressed. thisis why the front mounts always go and the other two rarely do.
if you're getting a clunk you may have a broken engine mount bracket (not uncommon)at the front. worth checking.
get a trusted friend to sit in your car and with the handbrake on get them to lift the clutch as if going to pull away in frist gear. you'll soon know if the mount or bracket if knackered by the engine climbing out the bay.
team grumpy....... its a way of life, not a forum post
