Yep, I did it last week.
I was very easy, in my case I have a GTi with DSG so I have the paddles. I bought a passat mfsw from ebay and took the buttons from that and replaced the blanks on my wheel. I plugged in the connectors for the paddles in to the new button modules and put the air bag back on. Started it up and now have vol +/-, mute. I only have the midline display so I can go through those menu's with the right side arrows and use the OK. I cannot use the phone button as I have no factory phone prep or change the radio station or track. But my left arm is perfectly long enough for changing track or station, though I tend to listen to my ipod on shuffle anyway. No VAG-COM recoding was required.
Its a very easy mod to do rather then swap the whole wheel particularly if the car had the paddles. If the car does not have paddles I think there can be coding issues. To be able to change the audio settings/tracks you need a Highline display and a "convenience module" ( allow for the car settings like auto locking to be changed via the display). I think the UK cars have this as standard, in Ireland the tight importers bring in the midline as standard.
