GOLF MK2 GTi 8V RESTORATION!
« on: 14 January 2008, 20:45 »
Hi Im Aaron and me and my friend are currently rebuilding/restoring a non running Golf GTi Mk2.
We are at the momment trying to change the igniton barrell to fit with the new complete set of locks we have fitted so it will all work on 1 key. We have a haynes manual which says we have to prise off the washer (with the spring at the bottom) so we can remove the igniton barrell we have tried everything  cry we have tried pulling... leavering with a screwdriver... using some crank clamp pullers to lock onto it and try to pull the washer off but it just wont budge. we spent a hole day trying to remove this washer and i just wont go anywhere. If anyone knows like a trick or nack to remove them, then please could you tell us. we cant take it nemore we have tried everything we could possibly try we even resorted to a hammer >.<... if you could get back with a answer it would be greatly appreciated  smiley

Aaron

what you are trying to remove is the spline adaptor, there are a fair few threads on it ;)
you could try getting a puller on it, or thread the nut back on the column and give it a few sharp taps with a hammer.  this will cause the column to collapse, and the adaptor will pop loose.  once the ignition housing is off, put the wheel & nut back on loosely and yank on it to re-extend the column.

You could skip all that effort though, undo and remove the nut & bolt at the bottom of the column and the allen bolt holding the ignition surround to the outer column bracket and the whole column will come out complete :)
