Another timing question....cam shaft sprockets
« on: 07 January 2008, 12:51 »
Guys

trying to set up the timing after getting my head skimmed & I'm struggling to get these two dots in the haynes picture below to sit at that position.

the best i can get is this, the dots are still lined up but just at a higher position

haynes just says they should just drop in and tighten up, but the lobes prevent this due to valves not been pushed out & the tappests sitting high.

any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

cheers

The notch on the right (exhaust) cam should be dead level with the top of the head. It looks like you should move the cam on the left clockwise by 2 teeth, then turn the one on the right anti-clockwise by one tooth, it should then all line up.
I only know this 'cos I did that same job at the weekend!

cheers but is it meant to be two man job, does some one need to push down on the cams so that they sit level, as when i do it , i cant get the caps on cos the correct position means the cam is sitting to high.?

The cams will appear too high because some of the lobes are resting on what should be open valves. There should be a sequence on how to tighten the caps. They will tighten down, but it will look and feel pretty horrible. Do not lubricate the mating surfaces of the caps though. This will give you a false torque setting as oil is not compressable.

cheers guys all done, it was me just being a plank

i forgot that although the cams turn the same way the marks move in opposite directions, so if you put them 1 notch iout in either direction then install & tighten up it lines up lovely

do you think i shoudl line the head gasket with a thin layer of oil before putting the head down on it, also should I emery paper the top of the bottom end that also mates with the gasket.

thanks

noooo.... just tighten it down in the correct sequence, that will make sure that there are no gaps in the gasket. Oil will just cause it to blow again, plus, as mentioned oil isn't compressible.

i think i spoke to soon ,  i screwed down the caps properly, but i've now noticed that the cams cannot be rotated by hand, if the caps get screwed down to the head surface the cams do not turn at all, all the caps screw down ok , but cap 8 is noticeble more difficult than the others & I think this is where my problem is , I just dont know why................

is there a sequence do screwing down the caps?

many thanks

Pretty much the same sequence as when re-tightening the head back onto the engine.

I.E>

Torque settings are normally in the region of about 22-28NM If i remember right. ( I am going off figures for a landy V8 but they should be about the same as there is no extra need for extra tight bolts.
