power steering problems
« on: 06 January 2008, 08:08 »
when i start up in the morning or when the car has been stood for a while the steering is very stiff/heavy,as if the power steering is not working.it seems to be worse when trying to turn the wheels left.it usualy sorts itself out and sometimes if you jerk the steering wheel then it suddenly frees up and all is ok.
i have drained the old fluid, which was a right old state, and replaced it with new but it still does it.
when driving all is fine it just bugs me and makes me wonder if im heading for problems?
by the way its a g reg 1.8 8 v gti mk II.
any suggestions/help would be appreciated.
cheers

Sounds like your belt is loose maybe ??
Computer games don't affect kids, I mean if Pac Man affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in darkened rooms, munching pills and listening to repetitive music.

i have a similar problem in the wet, pretty sure it's the belt slipping, is it easy to tighten/change?

Perhaps your belt is perished/brittle, so when its cold it doesn't grip well, then when its warmed up its "grippier" if that makes sense?

Spot on advice from everyone above, I had the same issue with mine and the new belt fixed it. When refitting it make sure the tension isn't too tight otherwise you can knacker the bearings of the PAS pump and then you will need a new pump.
