Brakes Ceased

HI All,

I was driving along yesterday when suddenly the brake pedal got very hard and the caliper on the front right wheel jammed on. I limped the car home with the brakes stuck on and took the caliper off and had a look and the piston looked ok. Driving to work to it feels like its constantly breaking. Do I need to replace the calipers or is it something else fubar'd?

i'n no expert but it could also be a collapsed flexi hose to the caliper. if it collapses it stops fluid retracting from the caliper and it sticks on. i had this on my beetle ones and it was an expensive fix as i just dived in and replaced the calipers!

Yea the pedal feels like there is block somewhere and then when the pressure goes down after its sat for a while it comes back to life. How to I check if it is the flexi hose?

take your wheel off and have a look, if its kinked or looks fubar in anyway then might be worth replacing, if not you can refurb your calipers, or a good excuse to upgrade to 280mm brakes lol...

How hard is it to upgrade to 16v brakes, just a case of wacking the larger caliper on?

easy peesy, couple of bolts and hubs off, then new hubs on and your away, only thing is, i'd suggest having new bearings done if you do upgrade the hubs... thats if they are 2nd hand obviously...

wait you'll need a 22mm master cylinder aswell if you want the 16v brakes to work! and thats not so simple to change as the m/s will need to be bled before fitting..

Had a general poke around last night on the offending wheel and cannot see anything remotly fishy about the flexi hoses. After driving to work again today with the brakes half stuck on I'm tempted to just take it to a garage. Regarding uprating them, its so tempting at this point as the discs and pads look mashed to bits. >>goes on the bay to find some 16v calipers + drilled discs  :cool:

yeah sorry, forgot to mention the master cylinder... if you do, may as well change all teh flexi hoses too for braided, give ECP or GSF a ring and price it all up... although usually you can get everything you'll need from teh bay, but it takes longer to come...

could do it all youself, have a go at bleeding the system, and then take it down to the garage and have them do it propperly so its sorted, then you dont have to pay ridiculous amounts for labour...
