Intermittent over run
« on: 28 November 2007, 14:28 »
Hi everybody. I have been reading posts on this forum site for the last year or so and have been able to sort most problems with my 89 8v, until now. Thanks to you all for being so knowledgeable! The problem i am getting is when i turn the ignition off the car will carry on running for a few seconds before shutting off. I then get a strong smell of petrol/oil. When i come to fire her up again the engine turns over a few times before firing. I think it is flooding itself when over running. I have also just noticed that the ISV is permanently buzzing with the ignition off and if left for more than a couple of days the battery will be flat. I have been unplugging it when switching off, but this is a right pita. Both these problems are intermittent and not sure wether linked or not. Any help would be much appreciated.

the isv only gets power from the ECU, so it sounds like an electrics problem at the fusebox or with the ECU relay.  Pull the ECU relay (see my fusebox FAQ for which one) If the ISV stops buzzing either the relay is stuck on, or the power to the fusebox terminals is goosed somehow.
Check pin 3 of the ecu relay socket, this is the ignition live feed for the relay, if it has 12v with the ignition off then you have a fusebox problem, if not its probably a buggered relay.

If that terminal is live, eityher there is an internal short in the gearbox, or the ignition switch is at fault.  To test this theory, remove the lower ignition shoud trim from the steering column and locate the ignition switch plug.  Look for the black wire, now without unplugging it you need to check if this has 12v or not with the ignition off, if you have a decent multimeter you should just about be able to manage to fit one opf the probes in to touch the contact.  The other thing you can do is drop the fusebox down, and follow this wire to the other end where it plugs into the rear of the fusebox, and test it here :)

Obviously if its been spliced into at any point, investigate these wires to see if someone has done a shocking bodge job, or if its hooked to a faulty alarm unit which is energising the wire.

Let me know how you get one :)

Thanks for the reply rubjohnny. Will check and see what the outcome is. I'll let you know when i've done this. Any ideas if the engine running on after ignition is switched off is linked.

if you got a problem with the ign live feed then yes, as far as the car is concerned the ignition key is still turned :)

Have you had any overheating issues? Or has the engine been pinking, especially under load? If any of these two, then the engine could have developed a hot spot which effectively acts like a glow plug causing any unburned fuel in the manifold to burn until the supply runs out. Also if you have the wrong spark plugs fitted or the ones you have are worn out, this would cause the same syptoms. Once you have done what Jon has suggested and if found no joy, then check plugs, fuel system and ignition.

Think i have sourced the problem. Water in fusebox and ecu relay is corroded on terminals a bit. Cleaned up terminals and buzzing isv stops. Looks like water is grtting in via ecu area. Any ideas on how to cure this?

Sourced the fault to a goosed ecu relay. Got new relay and fitted. No more isv buzzing with ignition off and no more engine over running! I have also covered everything in the scuttle tray with grease (all grommets and ecu plate). Also dried fusebox with hair dryer. Hopefully no more flat batteries.
