Hello - 16v Airbox questions and fuel consumption
« on: 25 November 2007, 19:56 »
Hello all

I've had a look around the forum but don't really understand what people are talking about.

Would it be possible for one of you guys to post a couple of engine bay shots of the air box and all of the connected pipes and where they go etc.  I don't have the tube connected that should go out of the back of the airbox (to where i don't know).  And the front air intake (is that what its called?) is also missing - does anybody have one or can point me in the right direction.  Also should I have a part going from the drivers wing to the airbox? i have a cap over that side of my box.

And another quick question what sort of mileage do y'all get from a standard 16 valver,  I'm getting around 220 miles to 40 litres of fuel!

Thanks in advance

Chris

Thats the rear,

Thats not my engine  :embarassed:

Post a pic up of yours and we can tell you whats wrong.

As for fuel, people will give varying results, i drove mine on the mway on a monday morning, spent 4 nights driving a bit hard, then mway back on friday and i did 163miles on half a tank. I was happy with that!
But before 20l would give 60miles, then i sorted all the air leaks, injectors, dizzy, oil change, tci module, ecu pins, injector seals, new gaskets and then it ran well. Pulled very good too.

think the bit at the rear your on about is hot air hose..goes round towards manifold..helps on cold mornings for starting..but dont worry if its missing ,,,had few mk2's without them..and no probs...

the bit on side of ur airbox thats coverd will clip off...and if you take off plastic cover on inner wing will help slightly with air-intake..give bit of rhoar when you put foot down you can also drill the same side of that box if you like to help as well..but only drill on wing side and bottom halpf of air box...

the front of ur air box should have a cover that clips over headlight and as you look into engine and down at it on your right hand side there is a kind tube that is part of air box that clicks into the cover over head light as your main air-flow comes through front head-light...hope that helps...sorry no pics...

on mpg in valver...when i had mine could get about 280-300 out of a full tank ...but could be low as 210 if driving like i stole it all the time...
got about 35mpg at 70mph...but again could be low as 18-20mpg on some days ...town driving was about 28mpg give or take a few....

fantastic cars when you drive them like they should be driven

Thanks for the replies, i guess my milage isn't too bad as I do do alot of short runs, I do put my foot down now and then especially at roundabouts

I didn't think the rear pipe out of my airbox was that important, i don't have any starting problems so that can get sorted later.

Heres my attempt at posting a photo of the bit i'm missing

Thanks for the description but i think i need a photo or something easier for me to picture.

Is there anyone reading this that can get the OE part number?

Another side question - whats the best shows to goto for concours golfs??

Thanks

Thats how its supposed to be  You have an early version on the 16v engine, your intake boot setup and airbox is different to later 16v's.

there should be a bit of plastic trim around the headlight that fits onto the airbox hole at the front but most have been lost by now, ill take a pic later
