V6 or R32 Mk4 - Is there really that much in it?

Hi,

I am the proud owner of a 2001 V6 4motion.  It's a lovely car generally to drive.  Has the V6 sound I love, loads of grip, shame about the brakes and tendancy to understeer but otherwise it's the best car i've ever owned.

It's an evolution of the original VR6 12 Valve.  24 Vavle head with no doubt a few other mods to bring it into line with modern emmision standards.  The V6 makes 204Bhp, the R32 237Bhp.  0-60 for the V6 is 6.9 (i've read 7.1 in places), the R32 6.4.  Top speed for the 4mo is 146mph, the R32 153mph.  In the cabin, the 4motion often has old man style wood trim, which I don't really mind.  The R32 has more stylish and comtemporary silver trim.  The R32 has a pretty good looking bodykit, the 4motion is just standard with body coloured bump inserts.  They both have a 6 speed box and the Haldex 4x4 system which seems to work quite well.

My 2001 4motion with its 113k miles and non leather trim might fetch 5k in value if i'm lucky.  The R32 at 53 reg might get as much as 15k on eBay.

My question to the experts is.  Is the R32 that much better?  Why not buy a 4motion, bodykit, silver trim and perhaps a supercharger (at a cost of around 4k I guess) to increase the performance?

R32 also has a quicker steering rack & thicker ARB's, IIRC - It handles so much better than V6 4M.  Plus it has bigger brakes, too.

There's a lad on ukmkivs.net who's doing an 'R28 project' - Fascinating stuff. :wink:

Ahh I see... Still don't think that justifies the extra cash.  I think I just want one and i'm jealous. 

I read about the R28 Project.  The car looks great but it doesn't look like he's got round to engine mods yet.  It'll be interesting to see which options he goes for to increase performance.

I agree with what you say.....the 4mo is a good all round package.....and the sound of that roar....well

However, I have had my 2000/W 4mo for around six months now and am considering an R32 next. The 4mo is a high spec one, with leather recaro's, climatronic and Santa's and only 55k with FSH. (the previous owner was an 'old boy)

Before getting the car I did toy with the idea of trading my mk3 16v for a mk3 VR6 highline - but the deal fell through and i went for the 4mo instead.

There are also the GTi and excellent TDI options available to consider should you not go for the R32,but once you've owned a v6.....

***** Word of warning ****
Owning both the above can be expensive to repair/maintain as I found out when my last service came near to £Â£Ã‚£Ã‚£ (Ht leads, Lambda, a/c compressor, front suspension mounts, EBD sensor).

If you can afford it, go for the R32......it will be the next step up.
