Fitting Front Shocks - Inserts Only
« on: 29 November 2007, 19:06 »
Few places on ebay flogging front shocks for the MK2, but they look like inserts only.

Havent got under mine yet, but just wondered how hard the inserts are to fit. It is a cutting/ drifting/ welding job or do the spring platforms bolt on?

The isnert fits into the shock body.. if not a sealed unit.. its just a part of a shock mate.. not a unit

ok, so that made no sense to me!

The shocks for sale look like sealed units, but do not have the spring platform and hub bracket, so Im guessing they will slot into the shock body on the car.

My question is how hard is it to do that?

It all depends on which type of shock absorber you have fitted to your car. They look the same at first glance, but if you look closer at where the fescalised portion, (chrome bit) goes into the body of the shock, you may see if there is a threaded portion on the shock body. This will indicate that the shock can be taken apart.
To fit inserts, remove the shock absorber and unscrew the part that retains the piston. (Chrome bit) Take everything out and launch them. Then simply fit the insert, screw it all back together and refit shock. About 45 minutes per side.
