For the smoking a bit it may need stem seals if it smokes intermittently on idle. I think they become a problem at 120k ish. 257k possibly a definate! There are tests to find out what it is.

Would be good to see some pics! Keep up with the vw service history!  :wink:
hi m8 i payed just under £200 for the car it smokes if i get cought in traffic or a cold start in the morning,but when you drive it it clears up was told it might be piston rings. but surley it would be smoking all the time then wouldnt it.l cheers ill post some pics soon

Worn rings normally show when you boot it hard and it smokes under acceleration. Mine smoked just as yours did due to 3 of my stem seals being crushed. On a new 20k engine  :angry: Get a compression test done, dry and wet tests by a garage and you'll know for sure! £200, cant go wrong! Get your pics out for the lads!
