so what actually is it then?  car seems more sluggish with it plugged it ... but if its there i guess its there for a reason?

It's a temperature sender, and the other is an earth strap.

1st pic is a temp sender as said.  The red & grey temp senders on a carb car are for the inlet manifold pre-heater & autochoke heater.  Neither will have any effect on the car overheating.
