New engine
« on: 30 October 2007, 10:27 »
Well, after 179,456 miles she needs an engine swap  She runs really well, but there must be a hairline fracture in the head, as the coolant system is pressurising. We have tested the coolant for gases and it came up positive

Anyway, I managed to pick up an engine from a sirrocco in August which we're putting in at the moment - although i've no idea how well this replacement engine will run??

Fingers crossed!!!

Well, good news. She's back! The replacement engine that cost me 99p from ebay appears to be a winner. I've no idea what engine code it is, but its out of a Sirrocco (ca. 1990). I was told that it had only done about 70,000 or so and after hearing it, it cannot be far wrong. Much smoother than the other, not tappety, very quiet.
I've not tested how quick it is, although she pulls well. The power delivery seems different too. No idea whether thats because of the cam or something else.

Its been nice driving my misses Mini for the last week, but nowt beats the Veedub

Would have thought the Scirocco engine would have less torque than the Golf engine. The Scirocco is around 100kg less in weight so doesn't need it as much. I assume it's from GTi 8v ---> 1.8i 8v (From Scala injection?) ? I don't think the Scirocco engine is as tall as the Golf engine either is it?

My Golf pulls better up hills than my Scirocco GTX did so I guess there is a difference in power delivery. It might depend how well the engine is tuned though, as my Scirocco engine wasn't tuned up like my Golf engine has been.

Tell us how it performs when you get a chance. I'd be interested to hear performance difference.

the rocco engines are basically identical to the equivilant golf engine, VW didnt make special ones just for the rocco ;)

Assuming both the old & new engines were injection models, the reson it pulls differently is the earlier k-jet cams have a better profile than the later models :)
