gearbox woes
« on: 31 October 2007, 11:28 »
my lass has passed her test and is now whinging ablout the car, says the gear change iss too stiff for her, tbh i is but i never had a bother with it, it goes into gear fine so the alignment is fine, which makes me think the selector rods, did a searcgh and the only threads i could find were for a total strip down to replace the bushes, i dont wanna do that cos it looks like previous owner has already done it, i just wanna know what i should be fiddling with to make the gear change a bit more slack

gonna be my mission for the weekend, along with gearbox mount, wheel bearing, cv boot, service, caliper overhaul, brake master cylinder replaceent and finally a dash bulb! and she says it should only take me an hr or 2!!

haha, the gearbox mount may make a difference so do that first and see if it makes any difference. I'm guessing you have a mk3 gti 8v with an 02 rod change box? If so get this fro GSF

71708 (PART NO) GEAR LEVER REPAIR KIT - £4.95

It's the ball type bush that tends to go, failing that possible synchromesh

the mounts still there its just when revving it the engine kicks back, but now that you mention it i feel a fool, lol.

mines a tdi, you reckon there'll be much difference? dont wanna rip half the car to bits for summit that just bugs her, imo its working so i dont wanna knack it.

Easy job to fix, the diesel mounts are stronger apparently because they are solid so there shouldn't be that much movement

make sure you get the correct gearbox mount as I was supplied 3 different ones before one that lined up proper... use the engine code when buying.
and they are fairly easy to do (mine wasnt as the bolt had seperated from the rubber and i had to angle grind it off!) oh and use a block of wood on a jack to lift the box up for clearance

SORTED!! where the rod goes through the centre console just in front of the gearlever had been gummed up with years worth of crap, quick strip, clean and grease (ooer) and its absolutely perfect now! seems to drive a lot smoother now!

the gearbox mount is buggered tho, the bolt is just turning free so im leavin it till i have a full day and wont need the car, wheel bearings werent on stock so its ordered (be here at 4) calipers just needed bled but new discs pads and shoes put my mind at rest a bit, bmc was 45 quid so i left it for the mean time, not leaking and brakes still work so no rush!

once these are sorted my lass has given the green light for a spray job! got a vision in my mind of what it'll look like and hopefully be done in time for summer! sick of driving a multicolour car, lol
