Air Con Compressor removal
« on: 02 November 2007, 17:53 »
I have a 1996 16v GTI and want to remove the aircon compressor and belt. Can anyone tell me if the belt drives any other item such as the water pump etc, or can i just remove it. (Sorry to sound stupid but the car isn't here at the moment for me to look at)
Thanks
Paul

Yes make me an offer (provided I can get it off) won't be until next weekend at the earliest Also got the good condition aircon radiator for sale as well. The system was working fine until 2 weeks ago when I split a pipe when changing the radiator. So pipes are now no good and evaporator / dryer will be no good now its open to the air.
Cheers

Just south of Bristol

It looks like the belt also runs the alternator so unless I can find a solution to also run the alternator without the compressor it will be staying where it is for the moment.

Does anyone know an easy solution.

Thanks

Paul

If you hold on you can have the belt from mine. Fancy doing a complete swapover with some cash on top?

It would be too difficult to swap the air con system into a non air con car, it would involve swapping the whole heater matrix inside the car, a job lot of hardware in the engine bay, and a lot of wiring and sensors.
You can have first refusal on anything I do remove if you want. But I wont be removing anything from the cabin heater system, and probably not the wiring or sensors.
According to the Elsawin software the alternator belt runs the air con compressor as well, but on the non air con cars it runs the water pump instead with a different pulley on the water pump.
Why aren't any jobs simple.

Cheers
