Indicator problem found, advice needed
« on: 30 October 2007, 08:21 »
For a while now I have had an odd indication problem when turning left the relay makes an odd noise and I get no flashy flashy. I have traced the problem to the indicator stalk its self.

I got a replacement set of ebay and am now good to change them over. But is seems that in the case of the golf the whole steering wheel has to come off. Great.

Advice needed:

Mr Haynes sez that the air bag retaining screws should be replaced whenever removing the airbag, is this so?

Steering wheel removal states a torque setting for the nut, I do not own a torque wrench, nor have I have used or need one, does it just need to be done up real tight (don't get me wrong I know its important that the thing don't fall off while being driven)???

Any secrets to changing the stalks over would be appretiated.

Thanks.

I've changed my wheel over and didnt change the screws nor torque the nut (just tighten alot).

So no need to do any of that, all i would recommend is disconnecting the battery before you do any of this work. Don't want it going bang in your face.

As above, but disconnect battery completely (take out even) and wait 15 minutes before  starting work. This is to allow any residual current to dissipate. Oh and keep battery terminals away from any metal.
Then safe to work on air-bag.

It can be done by grinding the back of the wheel and using some hardcore glue to stick the clockspring to the wheel or drilling.tapping and screwing. The glue idea is a much better way forward though
