Lack of power when hot
« on: 05 October 2007, 19:49 »
We have an 8 valve GTI on K-Jetronic injection which runs great untill held up in a traffic jam when it gradually loses power untill it can't get itself moving. The only mods from standard are a freer flowing air filter and a 4 branch manifold going into a 2.5 inch system. The car is also sometimes reluctant to start when mildly hot. Any ideas?

doesnt exist on k-jet cars, but you do have a sensor for the WUR & 5th injector, try unplugging them when the engine is hot and see if it makes a difference.  5th injector is on the blue thing on the side of the inlet manifold, and WUR is on the front of the engine block

Unplugging these make no difference when hot,but then they shouldn't as they are supposed to come into play when the engine is cold.
The power loss when hot, it occurs to me, might be engine bay heat getting the induction manifold too hot, thus heating up the intake air too much. This would result in poor cylinder filling due to the expanded air. What does anybody think? We have wrapped the exhaust manifold. Has anybody any experience of fitting a fan to cool the intake manifold? Water temp. does not go mad and the rad.fan kicks in fine.
Have solved one problem whilst playing in the engine bay with the motor running: we had an occasional misfire on some runs, a lumpy idle and a flat spot coming off idle. I noticed arcing from the HT leads to the metal splash guard round the dizzie. Plug leads are relatively new so not suspect. I cured it by cutting the bottom off a 1 litre plastic Vimto bottle (regular not reduced sugar of course!), cutting a 3 inch ring from this and jamming it between the dizzie body and the offending metal bit, thus insulating it. This also appears to have cured poor hot starting which may have been due to losing sparks.

Have you checked the water level? I know my Digi's have always lacked hot performance if I haven't noticed the water level has dipped below minimum even though the cars didn't get hotter than usual.

What are your plugs like after that missfire?
It should not arc at all something not right there have you checked if the earth strap is still on the metal casing around the dizzy? If the arc somes from the leads then there must be a split causing that even though they are new it don't mean they aren't fobared?

you can just take the metal surround off, ive never owned a car that had it fitted still!  Saying that it still shouldnt arc really...
