Mk1 Daily Driver
« on: 26 September 2007, 11:50 »
I need some advice. I love mk1's and would really like to run one as a daily driver. Would this be difficult or is a mk1 up to this sort of use? I do about 8000miles a year tops and this is likely to fall as I am off to uni this weekend. My current car is a mk3 and I have no issues with it mechanically (although do have performance issues!), is this likely to be the case with a mk1? I may have the chance to have it restored by my grandad although I'd have to confirm that with him as it would mean towing the car to Denmark! Basically I need to know if running a non-restored mk1 would be do-able for a student as well as if running a restored mk1 would be do-able.
Thanks in advance,
Tom

hey.

I run my restored mk1 daily, probably 5-7 miles/day to work and a few dozen more at the weekend :)

Mechanically they are mostly pretty strong and very easy to maintain. Stuff like disks and pads only cost me £30 all in and were easy to fit on my drive.

The main area for concern for a non-restored car is rot.

Running either as a daily...I'd say yes

Cheers lads, it seems that its fairly easy assuming you get the right car? I'm going to have to ask some experts at the big vw shows or alternatively is there anyone who's a mk1 owner/knows about them in Hertfordshire area (near Hemel Hempstead - where Buncefield explosion was) or in Lancaster area?
Cheers again for the advice.
