10.3:1 compression ratio has probably got some thing to do with it. Then again, the GTI cabin is nicely soundproofed so not really an issue is it

The 2.0T FSI is reknown for certain "characteristic" noises, particularly on start-up.

First, the "diesely" sound - this is due to the direct injection.  Whilst a good "ear" can notice conventional (manifold sited) fuel injectors pulsing, the direct injection fuel system works at a considerably higher pressure, and so the injectors are slightly more audible.

Secondly, the "tappety" sound actually comes from the camshaft drive chain.  If you look at the very useful "self study guide" of the TFSI engine (as found in my even more useful free workshop manuals thread  ), you should see exactly where the timing chain is, and then be able to determine if the tappety noise is coming from that area.

However, if any noises appear to be excessive, then a trip to the stealer will be advisable, as will a side-by-side comparison with another GTI.

Mine was very noisy, not just at startup but also after a run whne idling... tappety noise was there until about 3000rpm and then it faded... anyway, took it to the dealers and they decided it needed a new engine!!  It had done 27k and was under warranty... details in this thread: http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=62751.30
Mk 5 GTi, Tornado Red, Leather, Xenons, 18" Monza II's, Sunroof, 6CD in Armrest, Winter pack & Tinted Windows... soon to be adding ED30 front spoiler, plus R32 sideskirts... then getting fully colour coded!
New engine fitted when car was at 27k... last one went "noisey".
