Peugeot GTi-6 vs Mk5 GTi
« on: 07 May 2007, 10:22 »
Hi there, soon to swap my Pug for the VW (my head says grey... heart says white!).

Love the GTi-6, but it's time to move on.

Anyone else spent time with both? How do they compare (apart from a build quality point of view!!)?

cheers

My son has a 306 Rallye (same as GTi-6 really but a bit lighter) and I've got a Mk V GTI. I've driven his Rallye quite a lot and the two main differences are that the steering on the Pug is much more precise and has a lot of feel and feedback, and the other is that the engine performance is rather different despite power/weight ratios being similar. The Golf pulls from 1500 rpm whereas the Pug only really pulls strongly from about 4000 rpm.

And as you've stated, the build quality is rather better on the Golf and all the electrics work!

My son has a 306 Rallye
Nice

Used to have a GTi-6 many moons ago, still like the Rallye's now.

Yeah - I have had 2 GTi-6s in my time. I got sick of them breaking. Wishin had bought a rallye cos none of the extra bits ever worked (aircon, electric windows etc).

I dont think i can compare my MKV GTi with them. Golf is a different class.

okay, have finally got round to buying - well, hopefully this week - but I have at least now driven a couple of GTIs. Couldn't agree more with the replies before - the steering is a very different beast, feeling a lot less connected to the road than the GTi-6.

I would add that the driving position and seats are far better in the GTI though, as you would expect from a far newer car.

Enjoyed playing with the paddle-shift DSG, never driven an auto before, so it's needs a bit of getting used to for the newbie. But definitely fun to drive - just point and go, like a toy.

I had a 306 Rallye and before that a 106 Rallye in a previous life.  For me the 106 Rallye was the best handling car I ever had, but then again it didn't really have the power to have much fun in.  The 306 Rallye was a great car, IMHO the last great Peugeot hot hatch. I would love to go back to Peugeots as they took the hot hatch to another level from the early Golf GTI's with the 205 1.9 GTI and 306 GTI / Rallye cars. I already have half an eye on the 308 RC  Coupe due out next year . The Mk V Golf GTI is a couple of steps up from a 306 GTI these days.
2007 GTI with a hint of Bluefin.

It's a difficult one to quantify, they're almost cars from different eras. The refinement in the Golf is so much advanced of the Pug that it's almost like driving different class cars. I remember getting back into my old Clio RSi after having the 306 for a while and it was like a noisy go-kart, so it's all relative.

To me, the Golf feels like a more grown up version of the 306 - quieter but just as fast, with more toys and baby-ready of course.

Ah, I appear to have grown up somewhere along the line. Now, when did that happen...

My dad had a 405 Mi16 great engine and handling. He used to scare my mates to bits.
He then had a brand new 205 GTI that lasted a week. He went back to the dealer and got his old car back.
Bye Bye Edition 30

white!
look at all introductions - white is the color! The new Audi A4 was presented in silver, but sportier version of A4 - in white.
