Help needed on project car
« on: 19 August 2007, 12:55 »
Hi all,

I've just bought myself a Mk2 16v GTi (1987) with the intention of turning it into a road and trackday car, and I have some questions for the experts.  I'm intending to do the upgrades gradually as I improve on the track (and depending on how "into it" I get).  I'm a complete novice in this area, and totally useless as a mechanic, besides which I don't have a garage or driveway to work on.

Before I get serious with modifying the car I need to sort out 3 faults:

- clutch is slipping badly.  Would like to replace with a higher performance part, such as a Sachs sporting kit.  Are these worthwhile?
- gear lever has lots of play, making finding the gears difficult, particularly 1st.  I've heard this is fairly common... but whats the fix?
- key sometimes doesn't work, needs jiggling before it starts.  Whole new set of locks?
- And the drivers seat is twisted, but that doesn't matter because I'll be replacing it with bucket seats, hopefully before the first track day.  Come to think of it does that mean I need to get someone to make me custom runners/adaptors or do you buy kits for the golf, or do they come with the seat?  (Told you I needed help  )

The jobs I think I need to do to get it ready for track driving are:

- upgrade the brakes all round.  Would like grooved, drilled items as big as possible and upgraded brake lines (and fluid?)
- strip the interior, replacing both front seats with bucket seats and fitting harnesses
- replace the bottle-top (is that what you call them) alloys with lightweight alloys and sticky tyres

Later on I'd like to:

- sort the suspension
- fit performance hoses such as samcos
- fit performance exhaust and air filter
- other engine work (cams?)

So I guess what I'm after is advice.  For each job I'd like to do it the right way rather than the cheapest way.  I really am a complete amateur and would appreciate any advice on any of the jobs above.

Biggest question of all is getting a recommendation for a good mechanic who can do the work and not rip me off.  I'm based in South East London, SE16, and would like to get cracking right away!

Many thanks,
Mark

I can help you out with this, just click the link in my sig, there's also a kit from gsf that helps a lot.

Thanks, just ordered one

A lot of people have mentioned repair kits from gsf... do they mean

71708 GEARLEVER REPAIR KIT  or
71709C GEAR LINKAGE REPAIR KIT  (and does this fit 16vers?)

Cheers,
Mark

Doh!  Just started reading through the stickies and got pointed to the maintenance info bit.  Will have a good read over the week.

Progress so far...

Clutch has been replaced with an uprated one from GSF.  That works great, but as soon as the car could be driven properly it overheated and I had to get a new radiator (apparently it was pissing coolant everywhere) and radiator fan.

Those problems sorted I've just started stripping the interior and have put the new seats in (Cobra Monaco S).  Seem comfy enough but they're mounted quite high, or at least higher than I wanted (I'm 6'6").

Bit disappointed about how little the interior weighs.  I haven't been able to quantify it, but nothing coming out has felt heavy except the seats.

Oh, and I also managed to f**k up my gear linkage temporarily so I can't get reverse or fifth.... but I'm 99% sure its simply the short rod not conencted properly.

with the gear linkage, put the gear stick into neutral... and gaffa tape it into place(as central as possible, then get under the car, where the shift rid is and undo the bolt...the shift rod should move slightly and then tighten the bolt up and take the gaffa tape off the gear stick and hopefully that should solve your proble...tis what i did and i have a perfect shift now...

noble tuned - and still not fast enough!

dabill, thanks for the info.

Unfortunately I'm only reading this after finding out and fixing it (not before driving out of stop-start london traffic entirely in 3rd and 4th gears...)

The short rod had come off.  The plastic ball joint type clip on one end had split.  For the time being a cable tie done up as tight as I could around the clip has held it together but I'm ordering a new one as I speak...

Also stripped a couple of extra kilos off the car tonight and lowered my bucket seats a cm by removing some un-needed washers (which are so convenient I wonder if thats what they're really for)  :nerd:
