mk2 1.6 Help needed
« on: 25 August 2007, 15:21 »
right im new on here and wanted some advice, im goin to look at a mk2 1.6 driver later on today and wanted some advice on what to look out for, i spoke to the guy on the phone and he says that where the front subframe mounts to the body there is a bolt that has sheared off!!! now is this going to be a big problem to fix or what??? also he says that all the brakes have been recently replaced, disks and pads and new shoes, he also said that he has fitted a webber carb to it, so what problems do they usually have and what will i have to look out for????  any advice would be gratefully recieved

cheers, michael

well iv bought it 100 quid, its a solid shell. i think i will strip it down put the new panels on it, front wings, slam panel, and a bit of a patch in the boot at the back, strip the interior out of it and get a weld in rollcage, and have it as a play toy for weekends, then hopefully put a mk3 2 litre engine in it or similar,, also where is the best place to get replacement parts from, is it better to get original, better fit and quality but higher price or is it better to get pattern parts, maybe not so good quality and fit but cheaper!!!!!!!!

well if your just going for a fun run around then pattern parts would be ok i would have thought, if your going for a show winner get the best gear going!

we use gsf to supply some of the pannels at work, either that or volkspares. some fit straight on, some need a little bit of work, so you would just have to take your chances.

right i have spoken to a neighbour who is a vw mechanic and he says to get to the captive nut the best thing to do is cut a hole in the chasis leg  and cut out the old nut and weld in a new one then weld  a patch in the hole, now is this the best thing to do or is there any other option, i would have thought that cutting open the chasis leg would weaken it quite a lot, any help is appreciated as im stuck not knowing what to do
