The Mk2 engines go on and on. Plenty are quite happy with over 150k on them (people say that 100k is only just broken in), just make sure they've got a decent service history and check for the usual service parts like cam belt replacement.

The Mk2 Driver did come with 2 engines, the 1.6 and 1.8. Either will see you to a ton, but it's not going to be lightning quick.
There are tons of parts available for the Mk2, either from breakers yards, ebay or buying off other members on here.
The 1.6 can be improved with a weber carb (to replace the standard pierberg carb which can be rubbish) and a performance cam. Then add some alloys, lower it a bit, swap the grill/lights and even bumpers to give the GTI look. (alloys and lights can easily be swapped over to a Mk2 GTi as they're the same fitting).
If you're dad is a mechanic, take him along to look at any you find.
