Well seeing as the gsxr 750 ( bike ) is being sold as we speak i think its time to buy myself my very first car, being 19 and hung up on bikes i know very little about cars ( the elder man goes ape at me as hes a mechanic and believes i should follow in his footsteps lol )anyway the car im after will be a golf mk3 either 1.4 or 1.6 as there is only £100 difference in insurance, is there anything i should be aware of before buying an older golf ? which models have ac ( if any ) power steering etc. Probably not the best place to post this but i didn't want to spam the forum with useless topics ... until i get my car  , what sort of milage should i be looking for, what speeds will the 1.4/1.6 pull ( im sure theres many different models ) like i said totally clueless but i know one thing, i will not be buying a saxo/corsa/punto or any other crap that 19/20 year olds usually end up buying ( where i live anyway ), i have always loved the look of the golf and altho the mk2 gti being my fav i think a nice little 1.4/1.6 should tie me over til im 21 ( august next year )

im 19! no years no claims, and im paying a pitiful *cough* £1500 *cough* insurance... soo worth it!

oh yeah, mines a mk2 though, dont buy a mk3, i hear the iraq army uses them as tanks... mk2's are much better.

Well if you're looking at Mk3's, there are plenty around for sensible money, the 1.4 is bit sluggish, the 1.6 a bit better, though if you get a late model 1.6 it may have the 100bhp engine, which is quick enough (only 18bhp less than the 2.0 8valve GTI).

Personally, I'd go for a Mk2 1.6 Driver. They're lighter and easily modded to look similar to a GTI and then when you can afford a Mk2 GTI you can just transfer the mods across.

Just looked at insurance on a 1991 mk2 1.6 driver and its only £729 fully comp, over £50 cheaper than a mk3, what sort of mileage are they good for ? easy enough to get parts for ? looks like its a mk2 1.6 driver then, whats the top end on them ? i suppose anything is going to seem slow to me compared to my bike but its only got to tie me over til i can afford a GTI.

The Mk2 engines go on and on. Plenty are quite happy with over 150k on them (people say that 100k is only just broken in), just make sure they've got a decent service history and check for the usual service parts like cam belt replacement.
Look in the Mk2 section for advice on buying the right one.
The Mk2 Driver did come with 2 engines, the 1.6 and 1.8. Either will see you to a ton, but it's not going to be lightning quick.
There are tons of parts available for the Mk2, either from breakers yards, ebay or buying off other members on here.
The 1.6 can be improved with a weber carb (to replace the standard pierberg carb which can be rubbish) and a performance cam. Then add some alloys, lower it a bit, swap the grill/lights and even bumpers to give the GTI look. (alloys and lights can easily be swapped over to a Mk2 GTi as they're the same fitting).

If you're dad is a mechanic, take him along to look at any you find.
