Im just curiuos on your thoughts on the two cars as they are very similar
which do you prefer? what do they both drive like, my a4 t sport i loved the engine very torquy and good pick up and smooth, all i notice dit its quite loud at crusing at 90 ish bit boomey but may be the milage of engine
i get the impression the a3 is a more upmarket choice from various reviews and chat ive seen, better quality

I like both of them and know the a3 is rarer, from what ive seen its not neccicerely more expensive

what your thoughts pros and conseach car, i was thinking of getting and early r-s reg a3 or a golf s-t reg at some point, ive heard the golf has more little faults than the a3 not built quite as well,

ive heard there more faults with the golf but could be just some cars as the audis are usully very reliable only needing odd ball joints etc until around 135-160k,

also i thought i heard somewhere the a3 is more based on mk3 parts design etc is this true?
what are the view of people who have one did you try both?

i cant afford a average milage one i wanted one with around 90-110k ive seen lots with 130-160k but seam so risky with all th estuff my a4 had done before i bought it

what things have you had go wrong at at what milage sin just curious so i can ask the seller what they have had done and know what to expect in terms of repairs

my audi a4 t sport had done over 160k and had a new head gasket at 153k a new turbo around similar milage between 150-155k i fogot and oir cooler in same milage bracket,  all done before i got it came too about £1800 was spent on it, i did both wishbones as they were knocking that was 161k, before i sold it manifold was blowing slightly

they done ball joints etc around 143k, i know all these things go with milage and some even go at 100k ish with suspention, the audi i had seamed relible from history up until 140k i know all cars wear ddifferently with different types of use, I was just curious to see other experinces and what they had done and pros and con of the vw and audi

i have to admit the audi i had the interior was still mint and had no creaks rattles at all and drove very well, apart from the gearbox was worn looks like it was still on original
ive not had a newer vw yet so cant really compare it to one

sorry its all a bit mish mashed

not too sure... your gonna get a vw biased opinion asking that on here as its a more golf wise forum.....

but ill give my view as i just picked up an audi a3 1.8t sport on tuesday..

not sure what chassis its based on (wether mk3 golf or mk4 golf) but its totally standard and would out handle a mk4 turbo golf (in standard guise) all day long, alot firmer ride with hardly any body roll, performance wise id say there the same, ive driven mk4's and the seating position is too high where as in this its alot lower, so you get the sense your going faster.. build quality id assumer there the same, you get bad and good cars, on any production line anywhere in the world... so i dunno.... this being a golf forum and from my own mk4 experiences i know most of the problems, engine probs (cambelt tensioners, water pumps, coil packs etc etc) are there in most of the vw/audi/seat/skoda range, so i guess its the other things, youd have to find a a3 audi forum and read up in there for common probs???

cracking car though and im chuffed with mine, i wouldnt have another mk4 golf gti as had 2 and thats enough.. only a r32 would temp me back to the mk4 golf again... then saying that ive only had this since tuesday and will no doubt find a fault or 10 with it and get fed up and sell it lol.... but its been totally faultless so far...

I know it could be slighly biased but I dont see the harm in a heathy debate on it or what is felt by individuals, im not loyal to vw alough very fond of it and my prefered manufacturer, (im also very into honda civic vtis bet i shouldnt of said that ) I prefer the looks of the golf but most of the thing you stated in your reply better,
what the year and milage of yours any pictures,

are there any audi forums that anyone uses on here?

this one i picked up is a 98 r plate 3 door 1.8t sport.. , in a kinda dark metalic bluey/purpley colour, one owner full audi history 118k miles, new tyres all round and just been serviced with cambelt / waterpump / tensioners etc done in with it ...

http://www.audi-forums.com

http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk

http://www.audiforum.co.uk

theres 3 forums, i havent had a good sniff round them as i havent had a problem yet!! lol... but no doubt ill have a gander when i get chance!! like i said, crackin car, but if you want a golf get a golf cause youll not be happy unless you have, ive had more golfs of most mk'2 than i can count so this a3 is a breath of fresh air tbh even though its from the same family!!

ive seen a metalic blue the lighter blue, it was a dealer part ex from a main garage i might be offered it at  good price but im worried as its done 146k and may need reapirs soon but its near mint its a 1998 r reg but not got climate or air con but fsh may be worth a punt at right price
