my 1300 mk2 is seriously over revving. there isnt a tacho on but i think it may be idling at around 2000rpm. also the engine cuts out when slowing. are the problems related?? is setting the carb properly an easy job fo an amature mechanic, and how is it done? thank you

we had an 86 passat and still have an 88 golf, on these models there is an auto choke "pull down" unit fitted on the carb, sometimes called a waxstat, i think, when these units play up, the car usually over revs to about 2000 revs on cold.when warmed up, the problem usually goes. they sometimes cost more to fit than the old carbs are worth and a weber carb, with choke (manual) is often the better and more reliable option.hope it helps!!
