 Hi. I changed my water pump and thermostat on my 1990 gti 16v last month.  When I took the waterpump off; as my cars pump has pulleys on it for the alternator and power steering belts I came across an interesting problem. The alternator pulley was a single solid unit and is fine and fits on the new pump.  But the pulley that fits on the power steering pump for the power steering belt came apart when I took it off and appears to be unable to be put back together.  It is in 3 pieces and when you put back on the water pump(when not fitted to the car) just spins round the water pump shaft when the pump is off the car.  The problem is the pulley for the alternator belt which was on before I took the original setup apart was turning constantly just like the power steering belt driving the alternator.  I then went to the vw main dealer and ordered a replacement pulley to fit on the water pump for the p steering belt.  The new pulley so I'am told by the guys at robinsons vw is a redesign and is one single unit of solid metal desigined for my kr engine.  The water pump and pulleys fit together perfectly but the new pulley sits slightly further out than the old one (4/5mm). And the power steering belt is running very slightly out of position and is fraying on the outer edge.  Do I need to replace the other pulleys with new ones also. Is the original pulley for the p steering belt needing to have its 3 parts put together in a specific way? I know this is weird problem. do I fit a spacer of some sort to level the assembly up? all help appreciated. G
