VW Audi parts differance

Just wondering if VW parts are the same as Audi parts? Always liked Audi 80's and think i might get one but have been put off by people saying how high Audi parts are. When i have looked at pics on e.bay etc at Audi engines they look identical to VW Golf MK2/3 GTI engines except they seem to be mounted sideways.

Think there are a lot of similarities, best way to check is to scan thru the GSF / ECP sites and have a look at standard consumables. 

Mate at work has an A4 and buys most of his stuff online or thru GSF.  Never hear him complaining about prices.....
