mk2 and engine transplants
« on: 27 April 2007, 11:22 »
Right, this is where I'm not very knowledgeable at all really. I'm contemplating doing an engine swap on my 8v towards the end of the summer when the funds are after picking up again, and work away on it myself during the cold winter nights.

What I firstly want to know, is what kind of of transplants have ye done to ye're mk2's? I was told the the PD engine's are the easiest to fit straight in. I'm looking for big enough power though, so would like to do something crazy, but obviously there has to be a certian limit to how far I can go with it. I will hope to try and do the work myself with my father (used to be a mechanic).

What engine suggestions have ye got?

Whats needed to do such a conversion;

engine
gearbox
ecu
uprated brakes

what am I missing?

This is only a thought at the moment, so will have to look into the plausibility of it aswell.

Thanks,

Alan

most engines into mk2's are relatively easy. don't know who told you a pd engine was easiest but they were lying! only because they are diesel so you'll have to change all the fuelling side of things as well.

all depends on what you want really, vr6? g60? 20vt in its various powers? 2ltr16v? and also depends on what year yours is as later wiring makes thing simpler.

Hmm, that person shall recieve a beating

The 20vt sounds savage alright! Mine is a 90, so she's towards the end of them. Is there a lot of fabricating to be done for mounts for the engine, etc.

I'd imagine that 20vt engine's don't come cheap? Anyone on here have this done to their own car? Someone recently did this to their mk2 in waterford, so I must pick their brain.

a 20vt is a piece of doo doo......

buy engine (around £1k)
buy g60 rear and gearbox mounts
buy solid front (from me ;) )
buy downpipe and wiring loom from www.qpeng.com ( another £1k)
take a long weekend and do the lot.

job done from 150bhp to 270bhp (depending on which engine you buy) in no time at all!

bigger g60 brakes and better suspension is all worthwhile as well.

270bhp  What engine should I be looking for for that power? Might keep my eye open for a crashed car with the 20vt. From what I can see they came in the seat leon, ibiza, golf GTI's, any I'm missing, prob loads

I would try and get the loom with the enigne, like I said, if I could get a crashed one cheapish, it would be a bit better money wise. Solid front? The front engine mounts? excuse my ignorance, like I said, I'm here to learn what I dont know... All depends on how much ya charge joe

How easy is it to get your hands on g60 mounts?

I'll be getting coilovers shortly enough so I can lower her. Have a nice new set of bbs on the way from germany for me

Thanks for the help joe!

20vt's came in loads of mk4's audi a3's tt's etc but the 225bhp ones that came in s3's, cupra r's and tt's are all mapable upto 270 easily from qpeng. but they also need a decent intercooler so the cost goes up and needs a bit more work.

solid front mounts are great for making the most of the power and improving gear shifts, the ones i have are £60 delivered but i only have 4 left now and probably wont be getting anymore made.

g60 mounts are availabel from loads of places so no worries there... errr anything else?

Thats it for the time being anyway

I'll have to have a sleep on it, and try and sell my other car so I have the money to do all of this. The odds of getting a crashed one so are fairly slim so if I'm looking for the kind of power. And now I see the advantage of getting the loom from qpeng.

Will be back onto you, don't expect anything soon though.

Thanks again,

Alan
