Works well in a MK2, and pretty straightforward to do.  It will even fit on the bottom of your 1.6 head, though you'll need a webber carb to get it running right.

The easiest way to fit is to convert your motor to Digifant fuel injection and use the head off a Digi GTI, then you wont have to mess about with the dizzy it'll all just plug in :)

just a little bump to this topic, I'm considering this project now I have a good source of spares sitting on my drive (it had an argument with a tree on a narrow country lane...nuff said) and there's several immaculate condition auto's I've seen for sale...

mine's a 1.3 injection (it really is!!) so don't know how much is useable from it, i assume I'd need a gearbox and clutch from a matching size engine from the scrapyard?

Any help anyone can offer is much appreciated

Cheers!

interesting little car you have there, quite rare!
there isnt anything engine/fuel/gearbox wise you can use from the 1.3, its all different so you'll need everything from a donour car.
You'll need a gearbox from a GTI of some kind, and you match the clutch kit to the gearbox :)
You'll need a flywheel from a GTI as well, plus you'll have to think about what you're going to do about fuel & ignition, if you have a donour car the same year as yours you can just swap everything off it (hazard switch on dash = pre-90 spec, hazard on column = 90 spec)

Carbs would be easy, you just need to hook up an accumulator and leave the old 1.3 pump in, this should supply more than enough.  It wont be man enough for injection though, so if you go that route you'll need the in-tank & main pumps, fuel lines, injectors etc.

thanks a lot for your help there, I think that's going to be far too big a project for my novice mechanic skills, still it was worth entertaining the notion...

You will need the shift rod and mounting box from a manual might need a blast with the mig welder in a few parts, have a go they are all built on very similar shells anyway so can't see it been too hard. (famous last words!)

Probably got lost in the "Great Crash of 08
