You'd probably also need the wiring loom and maybe even drive shafts and clocks.

Any reason you've gone for the Mk1 1.6 GTI engine ? Do you have one spare lying around? Because if not, it'd probably be easier to get a Mk2 1.8 8v GTI engine and fit that along with the brakes and stuff.
A Mk2 GTI engine would also be newer and likely to be lower mileage.

hi thanks for the reply the main reason is because i was offered the engine for free and the fact that the 1.3 is now broke lol

i see what ur saying as reguards mileage etc, think i mite just see if i can find a suitable mk2 gti donor car, is this the best option ? , coz my shell etc is solid

You could always fit the 1.6, and dump the injection system in favour of a nicely set up carb. Not as much power as the 1.8, but more power than the 1.6 had originally. But you may also need to change the induction manifold too. Nice little project!

If the 1.6 engine is free and working, and you're willing to do the work yourself so that it doesn't cost you much, why not try it.
Get the engine, gearbox, loom, manifold.
Replace the clutch as you put it in.
Get a set of Mk2 GTI brakes as they'll fit your Mk2 better and the Mk1 brakes were pants anyway.

If you go down the Mk2 GTI donor route, then you'll probably want to just strip out the engine bay and dash of your Mk2 1.3, then you can just transfer everything across including the entire wiring loom and clocks into the dash.
Find a crashed donor Mk2 GTI, something that's got rear damage so that the engine, driveshafts and even steering can be transferred.

might be easier saving the time and buying a cheapish gti mk2 and spending your time on the body work... and tuning it. pleanty around these days that want some tender loving care...

noble tuned - and still not fast enough!
