Urgent help please!
« on: 13 April 2007, 22:08 »
All ideas please - driving home today I lost all power, rev-counter dropped to zero and none of the ignition/ warning lights showed. Just before I reached a complete standstill, the ignition/ warning lights all came on (as if i had switched on the ignition) and when I let the clutch out the engine fired-up as normal. Recently, on more than one occasion I have experienced a split-second jolt/ loss of power and the coolent light flashed a few times. What do you think it could be? Could it be an earthing problem or could the ignition be knackered or even the immobiliser?

Help!!!!

Cheers.

The first thing to check is the earthing points from your battery to chassis to engine.
Years ago, this problem nearly got us into a bit of bother with some gorillas in a 3.0S Capri when we, er, upset them with teenage antics. (Eggs were involved) Our car went dead whilst being chased, and we ended up running...
Turned out to be an intermittent earth.

Then check you immobilizer.

Thanks - can you tell me where the earthing points are and how best to make them good?

There are subtle changes between cars depending on age, model, country etc.
Remove both +ive and -ive leads from the battery and clean up both the terminals, and the connectors.
Then follow the negative battery lead down to where it attaches to the chassis. There it may stop, or carry on down to the gearbox. Make sure all connecting points are clean and fre of rust.
If this lead just stops at the chassis, (car body), then look for another strap that connects the engine/gearbox to thr chassis and make sure it is clean and intact.
When I first got my velocopede, the -ve battery connection was broken and just lodged on. That may be your problem.

Thanks - If its not this and is the immobiliser, any idea how to disconnect it? Its one of the "touch key" types, just about the lights switch.

check the ignition switch, sounds like it might be on its last legs.  Also check all the earth wires on the right side of the head :)
