Selling up, bit of advice please?
« on: 13 April 2007, 14:09 »
I need to get rid of my mk2 gti 8v. The problem is i don't know what will give me the most cash: selling as is with a new MOT or adding the parts below too?

The car as it stands has:

Boge turbo shocks with Spax springs (1 year old)
Good condition alloys with 4mm Pirelli P5000's all round
Supersprint system (minus back box)
16v rear lights
k&n panel filter

Looks a little like this, but will have the arches back on:

I have the following in the shed which i was going to fit.

2.0 bottom end (96k)
Kent gs1h cam with vernier pulley
tsr stainless manifold
suspersprint exhaust system
reconditioned head
g60 brakes/16v brakes (have both)
Full set of green tint glass, including windscreen

Hopefully i'd get £5-600 for all the bits if i sold them separately.

If you were me, would you stick them on the car and then sell, or sell everything separately?

Sell the bits off and get a new MoT- as a buyer I like things as original as poss which I can then change if I want.

Why sell up, tho?!

Could be interested in the bottom end and head.......!

Running costs. I just can't afford the petrol around town so i'm going (don't tell anyone!) for Rover diesel power!  :embarassed:

That's enough to make me shudder!  Mind you, my neighbour (ex VAG mechanic and AA bod) has one and swears by it.

Make sure you take it out for a good spanking before you finally get rid- you will miss it!

Sell seperately. If a car has been modified in any way obvious, the value actually decreases unfortunately, unless the car is sold to someone who actually knows the car or has done the work on it.

And i was so close! From my project section in January last year:

Righty then, here goes!

Bought this last week, an 88 8v gti 3 door in atlas grey.
Its got 85k on the clock and although it has no history to back this up, the engine feels smooth, no noises or smoke and the condition of the interior is pretty spot on. 3 months MOT left on it, had a new radiator, centre section of the exhaust and also had the brake lines done. There is one bit of rust that stands out, couple of bubbles on the bootlid but apart from that, nothing! Only thing that I can fault it on is the wear on the gear linkage, but a trip to GSF has sorted that one out.

Now for the plans......

Replace the suspension.
The car feels far too high and rolls too much for my liking. I've driven my dad's 8v with koni adjustable dampers and the springs which is a bit nice so i'm looking out for some of these. He's also got the eibach anti-roll bars but i don't think i'll be able to afford these aswell as the shocks/springs.

This is where most of my money is going:

2.0 bottom end, kent gs2h cam, and a chip (undecided what though at the mo). Stainless exhaust will also be going on together with a k&n panel filter.

Oh yeah, i've got a grand to sort all of this out with, and thats including the cost of the car!
