i got a mk2 box on my mk1, with the larger drive cups
(the box is actually off a mk2 sci, but someone had put the larger cups on to put on a 1990 mk2 gti, but didn't, and now it's on my car)

i got some new larger type inner cv joints, but they don't go on the shafts far enough (even without the washers) for the circlip to go on.

do i need late cabrio drive shafts? will they work with the bigger inner cv joints?

i was toying with the idea of swapping the drive cups over, but it's too much jiggery pokery without taking the gearbox out.

a welder mate of mine is gonna put some blobs of weld on the ends of my driveshafts for this car, but on his mk1 that he is building he is gonna run into the same problem. (he makes canal boats, and knows his welding stuff. good thing when you own a mk1 . . . )

so do i (we) need late cabrio driveshafts? and does someone have a spare set?

thanks in advance

mate, just did mine last week! i was trying to fit a mk2 16v g'box to mk1  drive shafts.

swapping the diff output "cups" is the way forward! its dead easy! take the rubbers out and the circlips then use a "halfords cheapest" puller to get them out! fitting the others is easy enough, just a short length of m10 studding in the centre of the output shaft and a flat bar to pull them back in!

i reckon its gotta be easier (and cheaper) than trying to track down new drive shafts!

Late rocco shafts fit aswell, you just need to grind down the lip on the outer cv a little so it goes in the hub nice. Easier than swapping cv's

i got my driveshafts sorted now, but my friend is running a hot engine in his mk1 (has cost him 4000 so far) and wants to run the larger cv joints

Got mine off a k plate. easy enough to check so just ask about when you spot a rocco breaking. Paid £60 for mine
