I have similar worries and did consider the question you poised but TBH I think my safety and the safety of others would suggest replacement / cleaning. The sensors are around £60 I think. For the diagnostics I would pop over to yell.com and search for Garage Services in your area and get on the phone. Mines OSR. A "how to clean the ABS sensors" with pictures would be very much appreciated as would prefer to try this tack first..

Anyone done this ? A lot of my local garages have suggested the sensor "may" just be dirty..

Why not buy a fault code reader instead of going to a garage as you can buy the reader for about £30 and this will come in handy for the future

Where would I get a reader from? Are the shareware ones on ebay good enough to tell me which sensor it is? How hard would it be to test the sensors with a voltmeter??

you can test them with a voltmeter.
theres a post somewhere telling you what the resistance should be. the fronts can be tested using the connector on the  strut and the rears are under the back seat.

Can you explain exactly how to test? Do you know what the resistances should be? Is it easy to loacte the connectors? Cheers
