help......gearbox issues!
« on: 06 March 2007, 22:28 »
hey ppl

please could someone give me a hand,

my gearbox is making some horrible noises, and having spoken to a mechanic it is going to need replacing (90%) as we were unable to check the damn oil level, the plug has a weird sized hole for an allen key.

now as its a G reg 1.3 what gearbox would be best? it has got a 4 speed, preferably I would like to have 5 speed ( economically speaking ) but working would be best!!!!

anyone know of places to look for a gearbox? any good websites? obviously being a poor student/bum i don't have a LOT of money but will do my best.

what i have seen on ebay is a mark 1 1.3 4 speed gear box ..... would this fit?

any suggestions?

oh and if i were to say for example buy a donor car with a 1.6 would this be an easy (ish) swap?

i.e. putting the 1.6 engine into my 1.3 (as its only a 3 door  )

17mm allen key you want, i use my mates set, hes got a little tin with 5 different keys in, there little thinga that can fit in a 19mm socket or ring spanner to crack it open.. £15 form screwfix and have the square keys the opposite end..

btw the mk2 1.3 had 084 of 085 GBs, dont know about before

been offered a 5 speed gear box, now is it easy to fit this to a normally 4 speed gearbox car?

if its not hard i'd like it otherwise i have to pay an extra 70 quid for a ruddy 4 speed!

the linkages and stuff to the (and also ) gearstick i assume would need changing, other than that, unless the clutch housing is a different size ect. there should! be no issues.

cheers for the help mate, think i might just put another 4 speed, been offered one off a polo 1.3 for 80 quid. hope thats reasonable, been told it would fit. could it just be a clutch issue? its a case of it making noises when not depressed.

no luck with friggin cars!

all the linkages are the same on MK2 4 & 5 speed 1.3s, a 5 speeder will drop straight in :)

not too sure about this as i have never had this problem but i think i have heared this problem could be to do with some kind of bearing possibly the thrust bearing, is it just on decelleration? does depend a lot on the kind of noise too.

80 quid is good for a decent age/quality gearbox, a five speed may be a better bet if, as someone said above nothing else will need changing and assuming you can get hold of one cheap enough. you must have to change the mesh thing by the gearstick though.

have you noticed it jumping out of gear or being a b!tch to get into gear? if not i doubt its the box anyway, could be though.
