(not good) Vibrations
« on: 08 March 2007, 22:04 »
got soem odd vibrating coming through the car, get to about 50 and it epaks and continues all the way thorugh, tis of quite a volume as well, and goes up and down with speed

have had suggestions of swap front wheels to rear and see what the difference is, im worried of it being a bearing somewhere or the front engine mount.. i think thats caused by reading aobut solid mounts though..

and of course we had so much out of the engine bay when it got swapped, maybe its time to check everything again, and tighten everything..

im also a bit worried aobut the elaky chock vie got one side.. wodnering if thats picking stuff up, oh and also had suggestion of a wheel weight being misisng, ive not had my tracking and camber setup at any point, so?

anyone?

p.s. the vibration did actually come through the steering wheel at a point on the m5..

To check front bearings, jack the front up and grab the wheel top and bottom, push/pull the wheel (not so much to pull it from the axle stand!) should be no movement.  No harm taking the car in and getting the front wheels checked for balance. Camber and or tracking wouldn't normally cause vibrations. Worse case maybe gearbox/diff?  check fluids, might be worth a gearbox oil additive slick50 and the likes, especially if high miles.

Good luck

i did ponder the gb or diff.. ill top it up, caus eit was elkain for a bit at first, maybe i havent filled it right up.. my dad only put it in fignr tight, the drain pulg when we put the engine back so i probably lost a fair bit, slick 50 and a oil topup must be the next step then

and check the wheels over..

bluurugh..

right, got it up on stands this morn, drove it through to 70, no real vibration coming thugh the car not like when under load, but still noisy, thing that was jsut engine noise though, and theres no real noise when turning the wheels..

hold the wheel 12 an 6 and thers pay, same at 3 and 9, can see the strut moving around very freely in the arch, does this signify dead top munts, and this is where my vibration is coming from? or is it dead wishbone bushes..

lso ony tired the apssenger rear but thats got slight ply at top nd bottom ad left and right grabbing, couldnt see if the strut was moving though, but all the wheels are on tight and that, so now im confused and unsure whereto go next.. could it be worth doing the suspension and doing bushes around the place.. or doing the bearings? its on 107, and it looks like original top mounts, as they are VAG genuine..
