This sounds like the Fuel Pump relay to me... when the relay goes this happens and the relay heats up alot so be careful when trying to take it out

yes the relays are under the dashboard on the passenger side. you want to check if water is not leaking onto the fuse box this is common issues with mk1's

More than likely it will be your fuel relay switch getting hot and then melting your fuse box. I had a few problems with this and I ultimately put in a new fusebox. You could take out the relay and sandpaper the connections of it and that should help your problem if it's the relay that is your issue.

I don't think the earlier fuseboxes are the same as the later cabby's but not 100% sure. You can get one from GSF for a can as that's where I got mine, but they're not cheap, about £60 if I remember correctly.

All may not be lost though, how much has it burnt through ? You could pull out your fuel pump relay and sandpaper the connections and pop it back in and it should last a few months, I did that for a while on my old one until I fully replaced the fusebox. I checked the fusebox before I sold it and it had not even started to melt the new one.

the early mk1 fuseboxes are different to later ones and most cabby ones. However the late MK1 & cabby fusebox is exactly the same as the pre-90 MK2, so easy to find :)
